Find Your Nightlife Name

In Darkride, vampire blood bars like the Nightlife are staffed by thralls who love to be bitten. To avoid taking their work home with them, these lovely ladies and gentlemen of the night work under glamorous stage names, and now you can have one, too! Just go to the new Find Your Nightlife Name page of this site and follow the instructions. Then post your name in the comments here or email it to me at laurarede@hotmail.com to be added to the Nightlife employee roster!

Quoth the Raven...

This week, I have been trying my darndest to get work done on Crossfire, the sequel to Darkride. It's still in the rough drafts phase which means that part of the fun is coming up with names for the new characters and places. Usually, I love that sort of thing and find it comes pretty easily, but I have been having a little trouble naming one particular character - the one with the feathers. Yes, Crossfire includes a raven who is the friend and familiar of one of the human characters. Knowing that it takes a village to write a vampire novel, I decided to crowd-source naming suggestions on the Darkride page on Facebook and on my own personal facebook page. I got over 30 excellent suggestions, ranging from the everyday (Blackie, Duster, Jet) to the literary (Edgar, Poe, Nevermore), from the descriptive (Obsidian, Sheen, Sharpie) to the funny (Guess, as in "What's your bird's name?" "Guess!")  I loved the Bunnicula reference (Edgar Allan Crow!) and learned a few new things, too.  (Did you know that Cimmerian means "complete darkness, devoid of light"? Or that Valravn  is a supernatural raven in Danish myth?) I still haven't one hundred percent decided which one of these gems to use, but at the moment I'm leaning towards Grimm, because, like Darkride, Crossfire is full of fairytale references and, when you're dealing with the undead, things can indeed get a little grim! I'll be sure to keep you posted on all the characters in Crossfire (the feathered and the not-so-feathered) and you be sure to "like" Darkride on Facebook if you want to join in weird conversations like this one in the future. Thanks for all your help in this, and in everything! "Nevermore!"

Go Ahead and Howl!

Happy full moon, Team Ander! While you're locked down tonight, you can distract yourself with the Cramps' classic "I Was a Teenage Werewolf." (As a Minnesotan, I love the line "I was a midwest monster of the highest grade...") Stay safe and know your pack loves you!

New Map of the Vampire Blood Bars

We added a new feature to this site: an interactive map of the vampire blood bars of North America! Just go to the Blood Bar Map page, then click on any placemarker on the map and you'll find a description of the blood bar according to our favorite thrall, Emmie. Want to add your local blood bar to the map? Just leave me a note in the comments of this post - or email me at laurarede@hotmail.com - and tell me a little about the place. If it meets with Emmie's expert approval, we'll be sure to add it in!

One for Team Ander

A few days ago, I posted the video of Fright Ranger's "Oh Oh Oh Sexy Vampire" for the thralls among us to enjoy. I don't want to neglect Team Werewolf, however, so today I'm posting another Fright Ranger song, "Werewolf Boyfriend." Cicely can certainly identify with this one!

Friends in Far Places

One of the fun things about indie publishing a book is getting to connect with book bloggers from all over. Today the excellent book blog  For the Love of Reading, out of Helsinki, Finland, features an excerpt from Darkride in their Book Spotlight. Thank you, Niina, and Happy New Year!
