This week, I have been trying my darndest to get work done on Crossfire, the sequel to Darkride. It's still in the rough drafts phase which means that part of the fun is coming up with names for the new characters and places. Usually, I love that sort of thing and find it comes pretty easily, but I have been having a little trouble naming one particular character - the one with the feathers. Yes, Crossfire includes a raven who is the friend and familiar of one of the human characters. Knowing that it takes a village to write a vampire novel, I decided to crowd-source naming suggestions on the Darkride page on Facebook and on my own personal facebook page. I got over 30 excellent suggestions, ranging from the everyday (Blackie, Duster, Jet) to the literary (Edgar, Poe, Nevermore), from the descriptive (Obsidian, Sheen, Sharpie) to the funny (Guess, as in "What's your bird's name?" "Guess!") I loved the Bunnicula reference (Edgar Allan Crow!) and learned a few new things, too. (Did you know that Cimmerian means "complete darkness, devoid of light"? Or that Valravn is a supernatural raven in Danish myth?) I still haven't one hundred percent decided which one of these gems to use, but at the moment I'm leaning towards Grimm, because, like Darkride, Crossfire is full of fairytale references and, when you're dealing with the undead, things can indeed get a little grim! I'll be sure to keep you posted on all the characters in Crossfire (the feathered and the not-so-feathered) and you be sure to "like" Darkride on Facebook if you want to join in weird conversations like this one in the future. Thanks for all your help in this, and in everything! "Nevermore!"
